Inner Worlds – Portraits & Psychology
This intriguing exhibition highlights points of intense connection between psychology and portraiture in Australian art and social history. It includes portraits of influential women and men of psychology from World War I to the 1950s, and portraits by artists inspired by the inner worlds of the subconscious from the 1940s to now.
In conjunction with the exhibition the National Portrait Gallery is hosting a series of lectures.
Saturdays in May and June, 2:00 – 3:00pm. All lectures are free.

Lecture series
The art of Inner Worlds
Date: Saturday 7 May, 2.00 – 3.00pm
Venue: Liangis Theatre
Dr Christopher Chapman NPG Curator of Inner Worlds explains the development of an exhibition that spans from Surrealism to contemporary art. Christopher discusses the work of Australian artists Albert Tucker, Sidney Nolan, Joy Hester and Mike Parr and their abiding interest in the subconscious mind.
Faces of war
Date: Saturday 14 May, 2.00 – 3.00pm
Venue: Gordon Darling Hall
Lesley Harding, Curator, Heide Museum of Modern Art, Melbourne explores Albert Tucker’s experience of World War II, his interests in the intersection between psychology and creativity, and their influence on his portrait making.
A non-material and non-physical portrait
Date: Saturday 21 May, 2.00 – 3.00pm

Inner Worlds features the recently commissioned portrait of world-renowned philosopher of consciousness David Chalmers by Melbourne-based artist Nick Mourtzakis. Exhibition curator Dr Christopher Chapman, artist Nick Mourtzakis, and Distinguished Professor of Philosophy and Director of the Centre for Consciousness at the Australian National University David Chalmers discuss the process of creating this commission.
Less than six degrees of separation
Date: Saturday 28 May, 2.00 – 3.00pm
Venue: Liangis Theatre
Dr Anne Sanders NPG Curatorial Researcher investigated the lives of the pioneering psychologists whose portraits are featured in Inner Worlds. Anne reveals the fascinating stories and unexpected connections between these men and women and their social and intellectual networks across Australia and Europe.
Inner Worlds and psychoanalysis
Date: Saturday 4 June, 2.00 – 3.00pm
Venue: Gordon Darling Hall
Inner Worlds evokes a broad view of psychology as a discipline. However, the specific interests of the practitioners whose portraits are included in the exhibition incorporate specialist areas including psychoanalysis. Exhibition curator Dr Christopher Chapman and a group of esteemed psychoanalysts explore the exhibition’s themes.
