The 2021 AAANZ Conference will be taking place at the University of Sydney, on the unceded sovereign lands of the Gadigal people of the Eora nation, 8-10 December 2021.

Call for Panels
The Sydney Conference Committee invites proposals for panels. All proposals are due by midnight, Friday, 23 April 2021. The theme of the 2021 conference examines the vexed term ‘impact’ in its relation to art, design, film, culture, society and politics. This includes the impact of history, colonialism, politics, technology, capital, nature, migration, and markets on art, design, film, and visual culture. The consequences of impact may be: aesthetic, sensory, social, epistemological, environmental, economic, material, institutional and/or bodily, and may involve consideration of human-animal-plant relations, as well as intersections of race, ethnicity, class, gender and sexuality.

Who should apply
The Conference Committee welcomes proposals from artists, art historians, design and moving image historians, museum studies academics, curators, and arts and design professionals to contribute to an invigorating program of panel sessions, workshops, masterclasses and performances as well as collaborations with local galleries and institutions. The Committee especially welcomes proposals from First Nations delegates.

Panel formats
All panels will be allocated 90 minutes, and must allow at least 30 minutes for audience questions and discussion. A standard “research panel” comprises no more than 3 speakers, each delivering a research paper of maximum 20 minutes, along with a short introduction by the convenor(s).

How to apply
The online application form will ask you to provide:

  • Contact details for the Panel Convenor(s) (2 maximum).
  • A panel proposal (of no more than 250 words) that describes the theme and topics your panel will address, and a description of the panel format.

Proposals must specify whether their panel will take place in person (at the University of Sydney) or wholly online (via Zoom or equivalent). All conference participants will need to be AAANZ members, and will need to pay a conference registration fee (which we will keep as low as possible).

Applications should be submitted at https://powerinstitute.submittable.com/submit by midnight Friday 23 April 2021.
