From 5 June to 26 September 2021, the Art Gallery of NSW will be exhibiting the finalists of this year’s Archibald, Wynne and Sulman Prizes. As 2021 also marks the 100th anniversary of the Archibald Prize, the gallery is also hosting Archie 100, a celebration of the history of the prize with more than 100 artworks carefully selected from every decade.
The Archibald Prize, first awarded in 1921, is one Australia’s best known art awards, and one of its most prestigious. Awarded to the best portrait of ‘preferentially of some man or woman distinguished in art, letters, science or politics’, it has become something of a who’s-who of Australian culture. The Wynne Prize is awarded to the best landscape painting of Australian scenery, or figure sculpture, while the Sulman Prize is given to the best subject painting, genre painting or mural project in oil, acrylic, watercolour or mixed media.
Winners will be announced from midday Friday 4 June 2021. This year’s Archibald Packing Room Prize is Kathrin Longhurst’s Kate (pictured). Finalists can be viewed online:
