Two academic presses have recently announced new series focused on art history and visual culture. Both seem to be spearheaded partly by ex-Ashgate editors, a silver lining to the sad end of those excellent series.
Bloomsbury Publishing has announced that Margaret Michniewicz, formerly Commissioning Editor at Ashgate, will be developing a new publishing program of research monographs in visual culture and art history.

Bloomsbury is thrilled to welcome Margaret Michniewicz to our Editorial team to introduce a new type of research publishing for us in a general area where we already excel,” said US Academic Publishing Director Kevin Ohe. “Margaret brings with her deep experience working with a cohort of tremendous authors. She’ll help us add strength to our robust publishing program in the visual arts, and we’re looking forward to working with the authors she’ll bring to our list and the new series she’ll create.” “It will be my guiding objective to develop an exciting, forward-looking visual arts program at Bloomsbury, publishing innovative and compelling approaches to scholarship and new areas of concern,” Michniewicz said. Michniewicz was formerly at Ashgate Publishing, where she worked as Commissioning Editor since 2011. There, she commissioned monographs and edited volumes in visual studies from the Medieval period to contemporary and encompassing all geographic regions. Among the Ashgate series she oversaw were ‘Histories of Material Culture & Collecting’ and ‘Studies in Art Historiography’. “I am thrilled to have the opportunity to develop this new publishing program of research monographs in visual culture and art history, supplementing Bloomsbury’s already excellent visual arts lists in complementary areas such as design, architecture, and fashion. I know that art historians will find this most welcome news – it’s crucial for scholars to have a publishing venue for research monographs in general; but in particular, it’s extremely important for art historians to have confidence in a press that recognizes the importance of high-quality publishing for the visual arts. Amsterdam University Press, for whom ex-Ashgate Editor Erika Gaffney is now working, has also announced a new series on Visual and Material Culture 1300-1700.
